I hope this email finds you winding down from a wonderful weekend. I wanted to share something with you.
This weekend, my family and I took on replacing our front deck. It has been 18 years since we installed the other deck. I got up that morning doing an "I get to use a drill!" dance. So, Don, Matt, and I went outside and went to work. My job was taking the screws out of the old deck boards. So I sat down and eagerly got to work, only to get completely frustrated. The screws were breaking or I didn't have the right angle to get the screw out. Don gave a tip, "It is easier if you approach it from the top." So, I changed positions and got a slight increase in success of getting the screws out. However, my percentage of successfully taking a screw out was about 10%. The screws were rusted, stripped, or covered with warped wood. I began to cry. I took a moment, breathed, walked away BUT I came back. I did not give up. I was determined to help my family with this project. Don encouraged me by admitting that he was struggling to get the screws out, too. I went back at it, because I did not want to let my family down...once again, tears and time to recoup. So...tactic change: crowbars, hammers, and saws and ripping the boards out. That was a Don and Matt job. I stayed nearby for encouragement and got assigned other jobs to do. You see, this was not my area of expertise, but I was determined to help and (luckily) I was able to find a way to contribute to this big project PLUS I learned about many tools. After a few hours, we managed to strip all the old boards off and take the railing down. We took a lunch break and Marshall joined us in the afternoon to help install the new boards. At the end of the day, we all stood proudly admiring the new deck. Thank goodness I had a growth mindset, because that feeling of pride cannot be replaced. Each time I pull into my driveway, I smile at that deck because I was a part of it and I worked through that frustration.
Here is the point: our learning right now is very different than at the beginning of March. An additional role has been added to your daily life and you are learning how to meet your family's needs and support your student. The adjustment to this role ebbs and flows-for both you and your student-especially as phases of reopening are implemented. There may be really good days and some not-so- good days. This is normal. This is part of learning. Luckily, we worked really hard at establishing bubble gum brains (growth mindset) for 6 1/2 months and working towards our vision of becoming better readers, writers, mathematicians, and citizens. This work continues at home. However, frustration may be experienced and that is okay. Take time to make sure that yours and your students' emotional and mental well-being is being nurtured. Walk. Run. Ride bikes. Draw. Color. Bake. Cook. Fold laundry. Sweep. Play. Build. Find something that will help with emotions being felt and take your mind off the task so you can come back to it rejuvenated. We can do this, one day at a time. I understand and I am here for you.

Last week during our weekly check-in, the counselors reminded the three elementary principals of the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. As I collaborated with the other principals, met with teachers, chatted with parents and even took a long hard look in the mirror, the message became abundantly clear-- Ya'll- we need to set some boundaries!
Setting boundaries was something I really struggled with my first few years in administration, but after taking my Leadership Matters classes last year, I "bought in" to the message. You've heard me preach the message. It's not a work-life balance as we have always been taught. As Debbie and Derek have taught us, when you are all in at work, you should be "all in". When you are all in at home, you should be "all in" at home. (Can you see me doing the motion with my arms?!) It takes a certain amount of dedication, but it is possible and is better for you!
But... let's be honest, this is easier said than done. We are fortunate in times like these that we have a constant connection to others through phone calls, texts, emails, social media, Google Classroom, Zoom, on and on... If we choose, we can allow others to have a constant "lifeline" to us-- one that never "closes up shop for the night", one that does not pause for weekends and one that does not take into account our emotional well-being. It's a line that we need to disconnect when appropriate, otherwise we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and burnt out.
It has become even more difficult over the last month. I have found myself right back to trying to find a balance, but it has very much been leaning towards the "all in work" side. I've found myself grappling with a new dilemma: how to keep work life and home life separate when both happen in the same place. Suddenly answering emails and texts at all hours of the day and night, 12 hour+ work days and being tied to my computer has become the norm... not a healthy norm. When I took a 90 minute nap on Wednesday, I woke up to 22 emails, 8 text messages and 2 voicemails-- in just 90 minutes! I have heard similar accounts from many of you!
And it turns out we're not alone! People around the world are facing the exact same struggle! Glenn Fleishman, a tech journalist and home-office veteran, writes a few tips for us in his new e-book Take Control of Working From Home Temporarily.
1. Create a dedicated workspace.
Establish a place that is just for work, for at least part of the day — a place where you can be in office mode, and where others in the house know not to disturb you unless necessary.
Ideally that's a room with a door, but it can also be “a defined area in space other people use, or a temporary space you set up and break down each working day,” according to Fleishman.
2. Keep Regular Hours.
It's important to resist the pressure to work longer days, whether it comes from employers or yourself. “Every office and job will be different, but you should fight to retain a similar amount of work while home as you had the office,” Fleishman writes.
That could mean your old 9-to-5 (or 8-to-4, or 10-to-6), or revising your shift to meet the needs of homebound kids or elderly parents. Whatever your circumstances, arrange a schedule that makes sense for you and your employer and stick to it.
3. Take Breaks.
No one works eight hours uninterrupted at the office, nor should you at home. Do what you would do at your regular workplace: Regularly get up and stretch your legs, grab a tea or coffee, take a lunch break.
If your typical day at the office included the occasional gab with coworkers, keep doing that too, Dinnocenzo says.
"You can schedule things like that, or just pick up the phone and call people, like you would walk by their office or bump into them when you're getting coffee, and say, ‘Hey, how's it going?’ It's as simple as that."
4. Don't fill up commute time with work.
Like taking regular breaks, much of what Dinnocenzo advises new teleworkers comes under what she terms “replicate and simulate": re-creating at home the habits and situations that help you be satisfied and productive at work. But “you don't need to replicate and simulate your two-hour drive,” she says.
If you had to get up at 6 a.m. for your commute, “that doesn't mean [now] you have to get up at 6 a.m. and work from 6 a.m.,” she says. Consider using that time to do something “you never had time to do before,” like reading, exercising or meditating.
5. When you're done, stay done.
"[You] really have to be able to shut it down. Turn Skype off, turn the computer off, let people know,” Dinnocenzo says. Set your status to “away” on office chat platforms, and make it clear to colleagues that, barring emergencies, you won't be responding to work emails until the next day.
In lieu of leaving your desk and commuting home, she adds, do something concrete to mark the shift out of work time, especially if it's something you typically did when you got home.
"We don't have that transition time anymore, and some people need that,” Dinnocenzo says. “A lot of people decompress with their [commute], and it is symbolic in ways that they were never conscious of.”
That might be a short walk, a cold beer or making dinner with the family: “Whatever you would normally do to just say, ‘I'm done.'"
6. Mute your school email on your phone.
This is my addition to the list. I know it seems crazy. I can imagine many of you just said, "Yeah right" when you read that, just like I did when Natalie suggested it to me last year. But seriously. Mute it. The convenience of having your inbox on your phone is unparalleled, but the constant dings and alerts will make you crazy. Even worse, it will lead you to break the new boundaries you have just set for yourself! If it is an emergency, you will receive a phone call or a text message from the person who is trying to contact you.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) — A Brownsburg author is offering a unique way for parents to adjust to working from home with kids.
John Graham, of Brownsburg, just finished a book called "Parenting Moments from Quarantine."
Graham said the part-picture book, part-journal is a perfect place to document the good and bad moments of staying home with your kids.
"Writing it all down, saving it for the future, and referencing back to it. When your kids challenge you on it, like 'I never trashed the kitchen when I tried to bake pancakes — that never happened!' Like, you know, "April 14, 2020 — that's when it happened. Would you like to hear all the details?'" Graham said.
He also encourages the recording of the positive moments with your family.
"For every stressful moment I see on social media, or they might experience their kids, there are some moments of closeness with your family. There's moments that you're experiencing things right now that I think should be recorded," Graham said. "Years from now, I think, young children are going to grow, and they're going to start asking questions about this time because it was such a time of change in everyone's lives. So, using this book as a way to reference back to these moments as they asked those questions and saying, 'you know, I'm gonna be honest with you. It was stressful, and mommy and daddy did get upset sometimes, but we also grew as a family, and we're closer now than we were before that because we were had that concentrated time.'"
Graham teamed up with local artist Tyeesha Bradley — and got this done fast. He came up with the concept in late February and after about four weeks, the book was ready. It helped Bradley and he were already working on their book, tentatively titled, "Did You Ever Act Like This?," which was a similar concept, just not about staying at home, or in quarantine.
There are two versions of the book available for purchase on Amazon. The other, 8.5x11, has more of a workbook feel.

I rarely watch tv. It is even more rare that I watch Netflix. The quarantine, however, has expanded my viewing repertoire.
Robert and I have been looking for shows that are light and will make us laugh. I have included three of our favorites: Schitt's Creek, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Love is Blind. If you haven't watched these, do yourself a favor and quickly binge your way through them.
Sometimes you want to share your Netflix experience with someone else. Unfortunately during these times, that "someone else" might not be in your home. Thankfully, now there is a Netflix Party option! You can find more information about it HERE. It's basically a Google extension that allows you to watch a video at the same time with a group chat.

We all know how important it is to be aware of feelings and to take care of ourselves during these challenging and uncertain times. My favorite band, ODESZA, did a livestream of music yesterday on YouTube. Although this might seem minor, it was one of the better parts of my week so far. ODESZA hasn't put out new music in two years and have been taking some time off after touring for 2 1/2 years straight.
The mix of music is amazing, but the most powerful part was a message at the beginning. The message is a voicemail from Harrison's mom. It really was unexpectedly powerful to me. I am including it and the music mix below. Enjoy! :)

Our new normal is anything but normal. I have not yet entered the work from home stage, but I have heard from many of you that it is sort of tough. Monday morning had every reason to be hectic:
Just as I walked outside to direct the first 6 cars through the drop-off zone, I looked up and saw the sky on fire in the east. It was truly breathtaking. I held up traffic, quickly grabbed my phone and snapped this picture. As soon as it had appeared, all the colors faded and the sun came up. It was a gentle reminder that the day held so much promise. Despite the rain and well-managed chaos, there was beauty to be seen if I look for it.
It's almost time to spring forward! Daylight saving time 2020 begins at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 8, meaning you'll set your clock to 3 a.m. at that point.
